Same Day Crown

What are dental crowns?

As the gold-standard solution for restoring strength, function, and appearance to a severely chipped, cracked, or broken tooth, porcelain crowns, or caps, are also used to restore teeth that are extremely weak, irreversibly eroded, or permanently discolored.

Crowns are often the best way to reinforce a tooth that’s been undermined by an extra-large filling or extensive dental work; they can also be used to give structure to a misshapen tooth or one that’s too worn down to be repaired with dental bonding.

What are the benefits of a same-day crown?

At most dental practices, getting a crown is a multi-step process that requires two separate appointments—one to prepare your tooth and take an impression to send to the dental lab, and another to fit the permanent crown. You wear a temporary crown between visits while the lab creates your custom crown.

That’s not the case at Arbor Dental Group, where the team of restorative experts use highly advanced computer technology to offer same-day porcelain crowns so you can complete the entire restoration in a single visit. The process works like this:

Step one

After using a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area, your dentist at Arbor Dental Group removes any old restorations or decay from the affected tooth, fills any cavities, and files it down to prepare it for the crown. A dental laser helps make this part of the process as quick and painless as possible.

Step two

Once your tooth has been properly prepared to receive a crown, your dentist coats it with a tasteless, non-toxic powder and uses a special digital camera to take several high-resolution digital images of your tooth.

Step three

Using sophisticated 3D imaging software, your dentist converts the high-resolution optical impression of your tooth into a virtual 3D model on the computer.

With the click of a mouse, the highly detailed restoration data is sent to a specialized in-office milling machine that’s been preloaded with a tooth-colored ceramic block that matches your natural teeth.

Step four

It takes about 15 minutes for the milling machine to create your custom crown. Once it’s ready, your dentist polishes it up, fits it to your tooth, and cements it in place. From start to finish, the entire restoration process takes about an hour.

How long do dental crowns last?

Like regular porcelain crowns, same-day crowns are strong, durable, and long-lasting, as long as you practice good oral hygiene habits and have regular dental cleanings and exams.

While the average lifespan of a dental crown is about 15 years, your same-day crown can last twice as long if you brush thoroughly and floss at least twice a day, taking extra care to remove plaque from the area where the crown meets your gums.
